NOTE ON PURCHASES OF LEATHER SUPPLIES: All leather supplies (lacing & yardage) will have flaws caused by the tanning process. We screen all leather supplies before shipping, but occasionally some flaws are unavoidable. With the yardage leather, this problem is usually unnoticeable after dying. If, however, the flaws are excessive, you may return the unusable portion for replacement. This return must be done within 10 days of receipt of the product.|

LEATHER FAQ

| It is best to keep your leather rolled (not folded) to reduce wrinkles. However, sometimes wrinkles are unavoidable in your storage situation or in the way the leather was shipped to you from the dealer. If it is vegetable tanned tooling leather, you're probably stuck and will need to just cut around the bad area. If you are working with wrinkled garment leather, you may be able to fix it. Get out your ironing board and iron. Put down some unwaxed paper to protect your ironing board cover. (I stained an unprotected ironing board cover permenantly once when a red leather bled.) Put the leather finish side down. Now iron on the back side, using as cool an iron as you can. Start with the silk setting. If it isn't removing the wrinkles, up the heat, but be very careful as you can scorch the leather. Hint: You may also want to use a teflon pressing cloth or a piece of unwaxed paper to protect the leather from the iron. Do a small test section and see how things work for you. On suede, a thorough brushing with a stiff brush can sometimes remove the wrinkles. |

| All natural leathers (lace or hides) will darken with age and exposure to light. This can happen very rapidly, depending on circumstances. In direct sunlight, it can be only a few days. Hidden away in a dark box, it may be slowed to months. But it will happen. The Unicorn Woman can not prevent it. Sorry. Darkening does not effect the integrity of the leather. However, uneven darkening can make a project look bad. This is most noticeable with natural leather laces. To deal with this, you can either cut around the uneven areas or you can "age" the leather equally. Just hang the lace up somewhere for a few days and the darkening will even out. I like to hang it near a north facing window, where it gets indirect sunlight as the indirect sunlight works slowly. You can use direct sunlight, but this may produce other effects on the leather, such as drying it out, that may not be desirable. |
